A local person, working with lawyers Duncan Lewis, is preparing to take Durham County Council to court for, they believe, wrongly allowing the Home Office to turn the former youth prison at Hassockfield into a detention centre for immigrant women without applying for planning permission.
The aim is to stop Home Office going ahead without the full public consultation they should have undertaken as part of a planning application.
Going to court is the only way local people can properly express their objections to reopening a site with such a grim history. Reopening the site will inevitably lead to more suffering, misery and, potentially, deaths.
