As the Nationality and Borders Bill returns to the House of Lords today, with all its implications for the unjust treatment of asylum seekers still intact, we continue our campaigning to get Hassockfield aka Derwentside IRC closed.
By now, we know that the centre is churning women in and out , brought to and from detention centres across the country, some in for short periods, others for longer. Many lack basic necessities, let alone items that we all take for granted. Others desperately need to contact friends and family or want to simply to talk to a sympathetic person who is not one of the prison staff. So alongside our efforts to close the centre, we support groups that have been formed directly to address this situation. Here’s something practical you can do to support them.
Friendship Across Borders is now supplying welcome packs to new arrivals in the centre. To be sure the group does not run out of items for its packs, it’s started a fundraiser. Click on the link to find out how you can help.
