Small boat crossings are again in the headlines as smugglers find new and ever more dangerous ways to outwit both French and UK government. But another news story that deserves our attention is this:

A North East MP and Government Minister, Catherine McKinnell, is tasked with looking into this proposal. We have long argued the case for detaining women in the community rather than in a prison setting (which Derwentside is effectively). Will the IRC be brought into the mix of places to be considered?
Our work meanwhile goes on, combatting the wrong that is the Derwentside IRC. We’ll be at the gates of the IRC every week as usual. And watch out for news of our forthcoming national demonstration in October.
