Yesterday’s national protest outside Hassockfield Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre was a celebration of love over hate and courage over fear. With samba, guitars and voices, a large crowd made music for the women listening to us from inside their prison.
Detained in Derwentside from all over the world (20 different countries so far in 2022) women caught up in the detention process generally arrive in Country Durham with no idea of where they are or how long they will be kept here before being moved on.
We were there to say to them that they are not forgotten. And to remind the Home Office that we are part of a national coalition of groups big and small combating the government’s unjust detention policies.
And we will not give up.
Here are some photos from the day (all credited to Simone Rudolphi).
