No to Hassockfield (N2H) and Women for Refugee Women (WfRW) are strong allies and work closely together to campaign for the close of Derwentside IRC, and more broadly against the use of immigration detention. N2H are therefore proud to support WfRW’s most recent campaign to send Valentines cards to directors and Chief Executives at Mitie and Serco – the 2 main private corporations in control of the UK’s immigration detention centres. The cards feature the message “stop profiting from our heartbreak”, saying that many women in detention centres have experienced severe abuse and suffer psychological harm by being detained.
At our recent fundraising social event, N2H were eager to share the cards and urge people in attendance to write messages as part of this campaign action. We gave out a total of 50 cards on the night, and there was an extremely positive response from people towards the action.
N2H took our fight to the doors of Mitie in November 2022 and had contact with Chief Executive Phil Bentley as part of this action. We are therefore keen to continue this lobbying – he is aware of our campaign and we have his attention! We are very proud to have supported WfRW’s campaign and to continue our shared work together.
As for our fundraiser, almost 200 people thronged the wonderful Star and Shadow venue to show us their support.
We auctioned a photograph taken by photographer Simone Rudolfi, who has taken many of the images you see on our website. The image chosen to be blown up couldn’t have said what our mission was any better: NO HUMAN IS ILLEGAL
