Our latest demonstration at Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre was particularly poignant and felt as important as ever: women detained inside the centre were outside in the yard while protesters made their way to that side of the centre with a PA, drums and banners.
The women called out that they could hear the protesters, that they appreciated the support of the protesters and were thanking them. Protesters and the detained women were able to have conversations over the wall of the detention centre.
Agnes Tanoh of Women for Refugee Women, pictured below with colleague Gemma Lousley and campaigners, spoke in English and French to the women, telling them to hold on to hope, to keep fighting and be strong, because hopefully they would be free soon. She said ‘I have also experienced detention like you, and now I am out. We will keep fighting for you to be free too.’ Protesters shouted messages to the women that they were loved and that their human rights and freedom would continue to be fought for.

Campaign Win!
There was also elation this week that thanks to hard campaigning, Women for Refugee Women now reports a huge improvement in legal provision for the women in Derwentside.
At last – face to face legal surgeries mandatory
